How to Install E-Z Sonic™ Threaded Inserts
The most common methods for installing inserts into thermoplastic – which can be remelted a number of times – are ultrasonic insertion or heat staking. In both methods, the plastic around the insert is melted during installation. The melted plastic flows into the knurls and undercuts of the inserts and then becomes solid again once cooled. This secures the insert in place.
In ultrasonic installation, an ultrasonic horn puts slight downward pressure on the insert while generating high frequency vibrations. Because the insert is in contact with the hole wall, the vibrations generate enough heat to melt the plastic around the insert.
For heat stake installation, a metal tip transfers heat to the insert which melts the hole wall. As with the ultrasonic installation, this melted plastic flows into the outside diameter features of the insert and secures the insert in place once cooled.
With either installation process, it is important to make sure enough of the plastic is being melted. We recommend testing your installation process on scrap material to create the optimum installation process for your application.
